Los Moños Malvados

1/8 9 in x 12 in Watercolor

This piece is modeled after the Dominican expectation of young girls putting their hair up in a hairstyle tradicionally called moños instead of embracing their natural hair. I wanted to demonstrate the expression of fear as a symbol of the stigma of natural hair planting the seeds of oppression in young Dominican girls.

Mi Río

2/8 9 in x 12 in Watercolor

This piece tells the story of the fantastical meeting between platano trees and a watering hole that serves as a simple retelling of Dominican culture through the food we share (platanos) and the rivers we bathe in. This was a highlighting piece during my landscape phase.

Montezuma

3/8 6 in x 8 in Fine tipped pen

This is a Caribbean countryside landscape that pays homage to my childhood. This piece depicts a classic Dominican home tucked into hills lined with banana and coconut trees, a large source of nostalgia for me.

Jewel Beetle

4/8 6 in x 8 in Watercolor

This beetle was a way for me to practice dimension in animals and to experiment with some amazing new watercolors I got as a gift from my cousin. It glamorizes this small creature that so many people see as a common pest and gives it a bright, colorful, and Caribbean vibrancy that makes your appreciate it more than looking past it for being a bug.

In Desperate Need of A Trim

5/8 9 in x 12 in Watercolor

This piece explores the concept of self-control and entanglement. I wanted to illustrate this through the monsteras overgrown branches that spiral out of control at the ends.

Still Life - The Mango Tree

6/8 9 in x 12 in Watercolor

One morning  I went on a walk with my dogs and saw this beautiful mango tree that the cows love to graze near. I was struck with inspiration, 20 minutes after seeing this tree I got my easle and watercolors, sat down on the side of the dirt road, and got to work on this piece .

Undertones

7/8 6 in x 8 in Watercolor

It's my favorite thing to accurately give representation and appreciation to people of all different sizes, shapes, stories, and walks of life. People with Albinism are so discriminated against in this world, that I wanted to highlight that difference and display it as a hidden gem through my knowledge of color theory.

Still Life - Growth

8/8 9 in x 12 in Watercolor

I loved playing with the idea of this still life piece. Seeing how this plant stopped giving

nutrients to the branch that broke poetically reminded me to stop giving my energy to

things that dont have my best interests at heart.
